Brazil Vs. Mexico

SoftSport question !

How did Mexico beat Brazil?

Analysis of the game, Mexico Vs Brazil ,reveals a definite predominance of the Mexican team throughout the whole game supported by a strategic scheme that worked out well in allowing Mexico to win with honors the gold cup tournament. The analysis of the data indicates that the Mexican team's performance was superior to brazil's performance not only in the final score but also on various events that were relevant to the outcome of the game. such as : shots on goal, corner kicks, total passes ,completed passes, intercepted passes and impact passes leading to shots on goal or the goal it self.

Bore Milutinovic quoted "Mexico used the attacking style of Blanco and Del Omo to play Forward as well as the creative style of Ramirez and Gutierez to support the Forward players. The major contribution to the success of Mexico in this game was the attitude , the determination of each player and the high spirit of the players that pushed them to get every ball from the Brazilian team..."

Analysis of the data confirms a distinctive concentration of the Mexican plays on the left hand side of the Brazilian defense. Most of the shots attempted by Mexico were from the Brazilian's left hand side and outside the penalty area. Tracing back the plays one can definitely see the distinctive Mexican strategy. two of the shots resulting in goals were initiated from the Brazilian left hand defense zone as mentioned.

Trace Back Of Goals By Mexico

looking at Mexico's passes in the first 23 minutes of the game we can see that there was a tendency by Mexican players to concentrate the plays through the wings mainly to the left hand side. during the remaining half of the game we can definitely see that the Mexican team had a definite strategic shift where they concentrated most of their plays to the left side of the Brazilian defense zone many of which resulted in shots on goal.

Mexico's Completed Passes in the remaining half

looking at the Brazilian team ,a close analysis was developed to review specific players performance in search of the possible explanations for the shift in concentration of plays by the Mexican team towards the left side of the Brazilian defense. again we find some interesting findings such as brazil lost 31 balls on the left hand side which accounted for 70% of the total lost balls in the Brazilian defense zone One explanation could be that the field conditions caused by heavy rain fall just prior to the start of the game thus limiting the results of skilled Brazilian players Brazil was only able to complete one pass inside the penalty area of Mexico during the entire game and very little penetration in the Mexican central defense zone.

Brazil's Lost Passes

We can also note that a major weak spot in the Brazilian play was their defense tactics. Luis #6 and Narciso#4 , both defenders, were responsible for 30 of brazil's 165 lost ball. this weakness was well exploited by Mexico where most of the balls lost by these players ended up in counter attacks as well as shots on goal.
