OBSERVATIONS & ANALYSISTM
    US NATIONAL TEAM
  • Team USA s excessive lateral ball movement as portrayed in fig.1 was due to the encounter of a bunkered Iranian defense, limiting team USA's play to the 35 and 50 yard play lines, just in front of the Iranian goal.
  • The bunkering of the Iranian defense allowed team USA to complete only 27 passes of the 73 attempted into their attacking third allowing for only a 37% completion rate.
  • US was only able to connect on three occasions in the Goalkeeper's box, resulting in but one American score.
    IRAN NATIONAL TEAM
  • Although completing on only a one to two (1:2) ratio compared to team USA, team Iran compiled a more successful attack by effectively completing short and long forward passes, providing for a consistent up-field pressure, centering the majority of their attack on the right wing.
  • Even though team Iran only attempted six (6) passes into the danger zone (penalty box), of those six, four were completed, two resulting in saves by team USA's goal keeper Casey Keller and two lost on crosses.
  • The other two passes attempted into the danger zone resulted in the go ahead goal, and the game winning goal.
  • In an interesting note: did you realize that although team Iran concentrated their attack on the right wing, they scored their game-winning goal down the left corridor?

FOMULATE THE STRATEGY!

  • The SoftSport data indicates that Iran played a classical " Bunker" defense against the USA.
  • Could a different strategy of attack open the thick Iranian bunker defense?
  • Instead of attacking in front of the goal as shown in the diagrams, our suggested approach would be to attack down either the right or left hand sides. Penetrate deep to the touch line and then center the ball back into the 5 - 10 yard zone for a shot on goal.
  • What do you think?
